Biography

He is presumed the William Ring of Pettistree who married at Ufford, Suffolk, England, 21 May 1601, Mary Durant of Ufford.[1][2] From the Ufford register,

"Wylliam Ringe of Petistrey singlman and Marie Durrante of Ufford single woman weare married together the xxj of May [1601]."

Exactly when William and Mary removed to Leyden, Holland, is not known.[citation needed] On 31 May 1614, Mary Ring was a witness to the betrothal of Mildred Charles and Samuel Terry in Leyden.[3][4][5]An additional witness to the betrothal was Samuel Fuller, a later Mayflower passenger in 1620, the physician and deacon of the Pilgrims in Plymouth, and a witness and overseer to Mary's will in 1631.[6]

William Ring was a say-weaver (a maker of fabric for tablecloths, bedding, etc.) and became a burgher of Leyden on 7 June 1619, and his guarantors were William Bradford and Alexander Price.[7][8]

The Ring family may have been among the passengers aboard the ill-fated Speedwell which was to accompany the Mayflower in 1620, but returned to Plymouth, England, because of its unseaworthy condition. Many of the stranded passengers decided to return to Leyden and a wait for another opportunity to migrate to New England.[9]

William probably died at Leiden between 1620 and 1629. He was mentioned in a letter from Robert Cushman to Edward Southworth in August 1620 from Dartmouth, England, as being gravely ill.[10] He wrote, "Poor William Ring and myself do strive who shall be meat first for the fishes." Cushman survived until 1625, but no further record of William is found.[11]

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

Seems substantial chunks of William Ring's current narrative are extractions from authored works, including some that are subject to copyright.

I am not sure much of a narrative will remain if/when the extractions are removed.

Working now identify/better identify the extracted material.

  • Paragraphs 2-6 were lifted from "William Ring: Coming to America" in "Biographical Information, Wills, Inventories and other 17th Century Documents" > "; web content (PDF). as Pilgrim Hall Museum, Mary Ring > 17th Century Documents.
  • For the first section lifted from "'The Chrisman Pedigree,' website" (5 paragraphs), see Tom Lincoln to Soc.Gen message board, posting of November 14, 1993 ("Thomas Clark's son John"); web content Google Groups, in particular part that opens, "The Rings from Leyden and Suffolk." Note: The two parish register entries appear in Coddington's 1966 TAG article, at 193-194, crediting the commissioned work of Miss Lilian J. Redstone, "Ring Entries in the Parish Registers of Ufford, Co. Suffolk 1558-1630."
  • Item beginning, "From Stratton, Plymouth Colony ..." including the quote, "It was most likely his wife, Mary Ring...who [arrived] at Plymouth ca. 1629 with children Elizabeth, Susanna, and Andrew” is reported from Eugene Aubrey Stratton, Plymouth Colony: Its History and People, 1620-1691 (Salt Lake City:Ancestry Publishing 1986), no page number is given, but it attributes the quote to Coddington, 1966, at 193--I found no such specific passage in the TAG article at 193.
  • Unable to find a reference for the passage beginning, "Note: Hills states that it is a bit uncertain whether the widow Mary Ring and William Ring were in fact married, but at the same time presents it as being plausible." Is "Hills" further identified or well known to those who follow this Ring line?
  • Passage opening 4 indented paragraphs begins, "According to the notes of Alvy Ray Smith (who bases much of his work off of Stratton's)," surely refers to Alvy Ray Smith, "Alvy Ray Smith Genealogy"; web content, AlvyRay.com, aka "Alvy's Site," although where extended notes might appear is not known. See the "Family Tree" entries for William Ring^1 and Mary Durrant, both at Alvy's person page 178.
  • The balance of the indented paragraphs in that section all appear to be extracted/lifted from Stratton's 1986 work, which is copyright protected. These lifted passages should be removed from the profile. See Eugene Aubrey Stratton, Plymouth Colony: Its History and People, 1620-1691 (Salt Lake City:Ancestry Publishing 1986); page numbers are not generally given.
  • Entirety of the next series of indented paragraphs (just shy of 1400 words) seem extracted/lifted from Martha Jonet Paxon Grundy, "English Separatists Roots: the Ring Family"; web content, The Paxon Family (hosted at Rootsweb.com).

Gene are you going to remove the extractions? I can [eventually] write a better bio - would appreciate your leaving facts/inline citations.

Hi Traci,

Thank you. I do intend to removed the extractions. (Whewy ... there were many.)

I'm working on his wife's profile now, especially to address comments to her profile. Will round the bend back to William as soon as I finish those responses.

Hopefully something emerges from that effort that will allow me to enter at least a summary on William's profile.

Will post a note here when that work is done. Then, TYTYTY, you can improve it from there.--Gene

Apparently it comes from the Crissman Pedigree (which is usually quite accurate), but that probably has been taken from elsewhere with sources lost.

This profile is desperately in need of a re-write as it's virtually all copy & paste.Volunteers?
